Another Purse

You might be sick of looking at the same purse pattern, but . . .

this one is a little different.

I lined the handle with batting. I like it a lot better that way -- the handle doesn't crumple up like the one I made earlier.

This purse is for my mom. The lining is made from a blouse that was 1/2 done, and was in the process of being sewn by her mom (my grandma). My grandma passed away in 1984. The lining is kind of a puckery seersucker type fabric; I really like the texture. But the "generational" connection is the real fun in this project and I'm excited to tell my mom where the fabric came from.

My grandmother made most of her family's clothing. The quilt pictured below was made by her, using scraps from all of those sewing projects. I could sit and stare at this quilt for hours. Most of the fabrics were made up into "house dresses" for everyday use but some were, I'm sure, sewn into church dresses.

Reproduction fabrics are fun but they don't come close to the real thing.

I realy like that bag. The flap over the top gives it a messenger bag feel. All the ones I made were open on top with a magnetic snap and I think I want to try a flappy one like this! thanks for sharing!

Ok...another post that made me cry! Thank you for being such a sentimental soul...I love the intergenerational message and memory. What a loving way to continue on the gifts your grandma gave to others with her sewing!

The quilt and the cat are just too much fun. Sue, you're always such a sweet person.

Great finish for the week!

what a fun project - I'm sure your Mom will be excited. I love using things my grandmother has given me. She is 93 and can't do her knitting/sewing/needlepoint anymore because of arthritis, and she seems genuinely thrilled whenever I show her something I've made from her supplies

Does your Mom know she is getting that purse with the fabric from your Grandma? It will be a real treasure!

Beautiful! You and I would get along well! My grandmother and mother also sewed and I always feel such a sense of connectedness with them when using treasured bits of fabric that has been passed down to me. This reminded me of one of my own posts you might enjoy, if you have the time to take a peek:

Love the bag, and the sentiment behind it -- and your grandmother's quilt is just lovely. Thanks for sharing! ;o)

It is so neat that you are re-using a fabric for the purse for Mom, she will love it.
On the other hand isn't it amazing how long we hang on to fabric? Me,too! My 30 year old daughter looked at my last project, and said, "Mom, do you know how old I was when I wore dresses out of these prints?" :-}

I love it that your using such special fabric! It will mean that much more to your Mom. I too like to hold on to leftover fabrics from things I make for my girls and they seem to appreciate it when they see these pieces in their quilts. Thanks for sharing this with us.
